Eslite Books (Xinyi Store)

Eslite Books isn’t just one of the biggest bookstore chain in Taiwan; it is also the most innovative one at the time it was founded. 1989, when awareness of democracy and cultural diversity were only emerging, a 24-hour operated bookstore integrating boutiques and cafes landed in Taipei. As it spread out over Taiwan, so signals the age of value on knowledge, creativity, aesthetics, and lifestyle.
The Xinyi Store is yet another breakthrough aiming to becoming Taiwan’s doorway to the world. In this eight-floor store, the 2nd to 4th floor is the bookstore. There are stores within stores (first of its kind with Japanese Store, Simplified Chinese Store, and Arts Bookstore), a grand selection of media in the Eslite Music Hall, and over a million books in Chinese as well as foreign languages. The 5th floor holds Children’s Bookstore and formerly had Taiwan’s first museum dedicated to children.
The other floors stretch everywhere between books and non-books. There are specialty boutiques, lifestyle and interior design brands, a theme restaurant and space for public events and forums, and a whole level of good eats in the B2 level -- Taiwanese, international, vegetarian… you name it.
A decade has passed, and Eslite is continuing to make the cultural, creative and intellectual life accessible to more and more people. More than just a weekend hangout, Eslite Books is what people would call nightlife in Taiwan.
